ABOVE Touches of whimsey are a hallmark of this garden, which was designed by nationally acclaimed landscape architect Herb Schaal of Colorado. For the entrance to the vegetable garden, for instance, he created an archway out of real garden tools sprouting from oversized watering cans ringed by trowels.

ABOVE In the treehouse, boys and girls challenge their fear of heights on a rope walk fifteen feet above the ground (though it seems much higher when you are on it!).

ABOVE Even a picket fence in the Alfond Children’s Garden provokes a smile. Designed to entertain and engage children of all ages, this two-acre garden became an instant favorite with both families and school groups from throughout maine and beyond. At right, this straw-stuffed character bears a striking resemblance to the hero of the children’s classic Down to the Sea with Mr. McGee and was made by students from Southport Central School for the fall Scarecrow Festival.
